Burger Centre

Burger Centre is a joint venture between Montefiore and JewishCare, ensuring our clients receive the combined expertise, resources and commitment of these two well-respected and established organisations. Choose from our Randwick or Hunters Hill location, Burger Centre specialises in person-centred programs with a focus on smaller group sizes and positive ageing principles. The programs are designed to support individual care needs including hearing and vision impairments, mental health, as well as those living with Parkinson’s and dementia. Individuals from non-English speaking backgrounds and Russian-speaking members of the community are also a focus of our programs. Burger Centre provides peace of mind to carers seeking respite and enables each person to live their life to the fullest, no matter their age.

What we offer

Retaining skills

Burger Centre programs focus on retaining or improving existing skills. All classes are kept to a maximum of 12 participants to enhance social connection, wellness and participation independence. For details of programs, please contact us on (02) 8345 9147.

Hydro-cise

The soothing warmth and buoyancy of warm water makes Hydro-cise a safe total body workout that helps to maintain muscle mass with less joint stress and pain. The gentle water exercise classes are conducted at both Burger Centres, utilising the on-site therapeutic pool and spa facility at Montefiore.

Dance for Parkinson’s classes

Modelled after the Dance for Parkinson’s Disease (PD) Program developed by the Mark Morris Dance Group and the Brooklyn Parkinson Group, these dance classes are appropriate for anyone with PD. In chairs, supported or standing, individuals explore elements of dance in a stimulating, enjoyable, non-pressured, social environment. These classes are open to partners, family members, carers and community members.

Fit2Fit

The Fit2Fit Program aims to support senior community members living independently to enjoy a high quality of life through fall prevention. Our occupational therapists will conduct a mobility and shoe assessment, making recommendations on skill training, walking aids and footwear. We will work with you to achieve the outcomes you strive towards in a friendly and respectful way.

Social connection

To prevent isolation and to contribute to better psychological and physical wellbeing, we coordinate a range of activities including day trips to encourage social connections and keep people healthy and active. Our activities are designed around common interests with other like-minded people.

Frequently asked questions

Depending on whether you receive government assistance via a homecare package, the cost of attending the Burger Centre will vary:

  • If you have had a My Aged Care (MAC) or an Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) assessment and are still waiting for confirmation of government support, the cost of attendance will be subsidised. In most cases, the cost will be $30.
  • If you are the recipient of a home support or Commonwealth Home Support Package (CHSP) package, payment will likely come from your package at an approximate cost of $95.
  • Clients with mild to moderate dementia who are attending programs for respite are charged $115 from their Home Support Package.

During a conversation with the Community Engagement Coordinator, please advise if you are a recipient of a package and advise the name of your service provider. The coordinator will then follow up with the provider to set up a direct link for invoicing payments, so no payment will be required directly from you.

If a client moves to a nursing home or hostel, the Burger Centre is no longer an option for them. Most residential facilities have an active leisure and lifestyle program and are included in the fees paid to the facility. However, the Burger Centre does have access to a small amount of funds to support Burger Centre clients who move into a non-Jewish residential facility and feel their cultural needs are not being met or are feeling socially isolated from the community. In these circumstances, please speak to the Burger Centre Manager who has the discretion to approve attendance.

A client may cease to attend the Burger Centre when:

  • The individual no longer requires or desires the service, i.e., they may have moved away.
  • The person’s functional ability, because of their dementia or other illness, requires care the centre is not able to support.
  • Two people are required to assist with transfers.
  • There is dual incontinence.
  • Client behaviour adversely affects other clients at the centre and behavioural management strategies prove ineffective.

Staff members at the Burger Centre speak several community languages such as Russian, Hebrew, Yiddish, Hungarian and French. If you prefer to speak one of these languages, your orientation and assessment will be completed by one of our bilingual workers, or our skilled staff will be assisted by a confidential interpreter service. Due to the diversity of backgrounds of our members it is likely that while at the centre you will meet another client who speaks the same language as you.
